Pavel Koutecký Award

The Pavel Koutecký Award is a prestigious Czech award for documentary films with a history dating back to 2007 – two years before the first Czech Lion Award for documentary film was presented and three years before the Film Critics’ Awards were established. Alongside the One World International Human Rights Film Festival and Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, the award serves as a key platform for promoting Czech documentary filmmaking and discovering new talent.

Each year, the Pavel Koutecký Award honors the best feature-length documentary – which must always be the filmmakers’ debut or second film – and the best short documentary, regardless of the creative team’s experience. The winner is selected by a jury consisting of prominent figures from the cultural sphere, not only from the film industry.

The impulse for establishing the award was the untimely death of the prominent Czech director Pavel Koutecký. He was renowned for his socially engaged work, the pinnacle of which was the documentary film about the first Czech president – Citizen Havel.

Our team has been running the Pavel Koutecký Award since 2017, when we took over the organization from the award’s founder and long-time collaborator of Pavel Koutecký, Jarmila Poláková. We moved it from Prague’s Archa Theatre to Ústí nad Labem and Dresden for seven years, where the award was presented as part of the ELBE DOCK International Film Festival, before returning back to Prague in 2025 to celebrate the award’s 20th anniversary.

The award has evolved from a simple ceremony into an intensive film festival with an educational component. In addition to the competition screenings and discussions with filmmakers at Kino Kavalírka, we also offer programs for high schools and educational workshops for teachers. While continuing to champion Czech documentaries, we are now also focusing on embedding them into the educational system.
